MATHNext Professional Development

MATHNext helps teachers (grades 6 - 9) understand how complex problems, given to students in
classrooms where instructional practice is designed to support cognitive demand and emotional
risk-taking, results in deeper levels of learning and increased engagement and persistence
in learning math.

Teacher Professional Development (download flyer)

Activities include:

  • three days of in-person workshops, with meals,*
  • after-school webinars (one or two each month),
  • additional technology-supported learning experiences (eg. website reflection on practice activities), and
  • multiple teacher-administered student questionnaires/surveys that measure student engagement and persistence in learning with analysis and feedback.

Participating teachers may come from multiple schools within a district. However, if opting for Enhanced Services, all onsite visits will be limited to one school for each onsite visit.
Basic Service participants are offered all of the bulleted activities listed above. Basic Service does not include onsite visits by MATHNext personnel.
Onsite visits may include some or all of the visits to teachers’ classrooms by MATHNext to help teachers implement project personalized debriefing sessions led by MATHNext workshops for participants and colleagues by MATHNext personnel. Participating teachers may come from multiple schools within a district. However, if opting for Enhanced Services, all onsite visits will be limited to one school for each onsite visit.

Both the basic service and enhanced service options are appropriate for Title I funding. Graduate and/or continuing education credit from Rutgers University options available. (Additional fees may apply.) Perfect foundation for educators writing dissertations or theses.

MATHNext schools will be eligible to participate in competitive proposals submitted in 2009/2010 under ARRA federal ‘Innovation’ stimulus funding by the Business Coalition for Educational Excellence at the New Jersey Chamber of Commerce, with Rutgers Newark and the support of the New Jersey Department of Education
